THE MILKY WAY CORE OVER LAKE VYRNWY

Milky Way Lake Vyrnwy.jpg

The Milky Way core over Lake Vyrnwy, Wales. The rocks in the foreground form the remnants of what was the old village of Llanwddyn - infamously demolished and submerged under the newly built Lake Vyrnwy reservoir in the 1880s. Before the dam and reservoir were built, the village sat in what was known as the Vyrnwy Valley.

Towards the top of the image is what I believe to be a Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arc - a rare, red, optical phenomenon that occurs in the upper atmosphere during strong geomagnetic storms.
